Subscribers get a pretty big discount, 40% I think. You can't use in-game currency, only Cartel Coins (crowns). You can change everything about your character except your gender. The SWTOR appearance designer kiosks are actually pretty cool.
It is almost as good a design as ESO's and the implementation is far better. It was somewhat expensive, but still very nice to be able to change colors.
